The pole was the 49th of Martin's career, his second at Daytona International Speedway and his first in the 500, making him the sport's oldest (at 51-plus) Daytona 500 pole-winner.
“I wanted to set records for the youngest of all those things,” Martin said with a laugh. “But I'd rather be the oldest winner than never have a 500 pole. This isn't an accomplishment of mine, it's an accomplishment of all the guys on this team.”
