Helio Castroneves became the fourth driver to win at least four Indianapolis 500 poles with a dominating effort in Saturday's new qualification format at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Castroneves delivered a four-lap average of 227.970 mph in the first attempt of the new shootout involving the top nine drivers.
The Brazilian sat in his car as the rest of the 90-minute segment expired. Meanwhile, his rivals took several shots at the event's best run since 2006.
Castroneves joined Rick Mears (six) and Rex Mays and A.J. Foyt (four each) in the pole record books. He will go for his record-tying fourth 500 victory on May 30. Foyt, Al Unser and Mears are the others with four victories.
