|  | |  |  | October 5, 2010 No more grade inflation: NHTSA revamps crash test ratings The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today unveiled the updated 5-Star Safety Ratings System to assess crash worthiness in new vehicles starting with the 2011 model year. Ratings for 33 out of 55 vehicles to be tested under the new system were announced and only two vehicles received the top overall rating—the BMW 5 Series and the later Hyundai Sonata (those built from July 2 onwards). Twenty-eight other vehicles earned four stars. [READ FULL ARTICLE] September 30, 2010 CPSC and FDA feds take a position on sleep positioners A new warning came out yesterday about infant sleep positioners, following the suffocation deaths of 12 infants over the past 13 years. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration are telling parents not to use the mats with bolsters, which claim to keep infants on their backs and reduce the risk of SIDS. As well as the 12 deaths, there are dozens of cases of infants becoming wedged in a potentially dangerous position. [READ FULL ARTICLE] September 29, 2010 Lint-filled dryers cause home fires The good news is that most people do clean the lint filter in their dryers on a regular basis, according to a survey by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The bad news is that the leading cause of fires caused by dryers is still a failure to clean, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). Although most people are diligent about emptying the lint basket—the top reason given was to reduce the risk of fire—far fewer people clean out the dryer ducts and cabinets. Incorrectly assembled trampolines can allow the top rails and legs to bend or break during normal use, resulting in partial collapse of the trampoline. [READ THE FULL STORY] |  | Safety October 7, 2010 Consumer Reports testing prompts stroller recalls The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recalls of two jogging strollers for hazards that Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, brought to their attention earlier this year. Our testing uncovered safety hazards with these strollers and we rated them a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk." In total, 12,800 strollers were recalled for risk of strangulation.
