Chevy Volt just a hybrid?

As GM starts to put production Chevy Volts in the hands of journalists, we found out this week that the car's gas engine can help drive the wheels. A good technical breakdown by Motor Trend explained how the Volt can combine the power of its traction motor and gas engine through a planetary gearset. Many on the Internet felt GM lied about the Volt. GM notes that the Volt's main traction motor always drives the wheels, but at speeds of 70 mph with a depleted battery, the boost from the gas engine makes the car more efficient.
