New Reports

Cars: Annual auto special, behind the scenes at Consumer Reports' auto test center, and who makes the best cars?
If you're in the market for a new car, the models on our Top Picks list are as close as it gets to "no-brainers." They're impressive all-around vehicles, chosen from more than 280 we've recently tested. We also found the best models of the year in 10 categories, including budget car, midsized sedan, green car, and sports cars.

Watch our video to get a look behind the scenes of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center and not only see how we test cars, but what makes us different. Our Brand Report Cards grade each car maker based on test scores and predicted reliability. The analysis finds that the top seven brands are Japanese, and most Detroit brands fall toward the bottom.

Personal finance: Advice and tips for preparing your 2012 tax return and six energy-efficient upgrades that qualify for 2012 tax credits
Filing your tax return doesn't have to be a trying or anxious annual experience. Consumer Reports' personal-finance experts have handy tax tips that you'll find useful as the April 15 deadline approaches.

As a result of the last-minute Taxpayer Relief Act, six common energy-efficient upgrades you may have made to your home in 2012 (or plan to make this year) are eligible for a federal tax credit.

Home: Air purifiers and latest mattress Ratings
The best portable air purifiers will clean the air of dust, smoke, and pollen at high or low speed. For whole-house purifiers, we recommend models that filter dust and pollen without impeding airflow of forced-air heating and cooling systems.

What does it take to get a good night's sleep? To find the top mattresses we tested innerspring and foam models in the best-selling queen size mattresses from Sealy, Serta, Simmons, Stearns & Foster, and Tempur-Pedic, plus more. Three of our recommended mattresses cost well under $1,000.

Electronics: LG 84-inch Ultra HD TV, and Windows 8 laptops
Ultra HD TVs are a new breed of higher-resolution sets that promise even sharper, more detailed images than the best 1080p models can deliver. We wondered if they can possibly live up to the hype, and tested one of the first models on the market. It turns out there's good reason to like the 84-inch ultra HD TV.

Consumer Reports' tests of the latest laptops and desktops show you can get a lot of bang for your buck. In fact, we've just finished testing some of the lowest-priced Windows 8 laptops yet, including an Asus VivoBook touch-screen model.

Health: Alzheimer's drugs cost a lot but help just a little, fat facts and fat fiction, and preventing deadly blot clots
There are several drugs approved to treat Alzheimer's, including donepezil (Aricept and generic) and memantine (Namenda). But they don't work well for most people. In fact, we found that none of the drugs could be recommended. Our report on Alzheimer's drugs tells you why none of the drugs we tested received our "Best Buy" designation.

If you're confused about which fats are good for you and which are bad for you these days, you're in good company. We've detailed both the facts and fiction about fats to help you make the best choices for your health.

Blood clots can be lifesaving when they stop bleeding caused by a cut or injury. But they can be deadly if they form when and where they aren't needed. Those in your legs can be as lethal as clots in your brain or heart. Know the warning signs and find out who's at risk.

Babies and kids: Parent's insurance guide and snow blower safety
Protect your family from financial loss that they can't handle on their own by covering yourself. Our guide covers life insurance, disability, homeowners, car insurance and more. Follow our advice on how to protect your family without breaking the bank.

Child injuries associated with snow blowers can be anything from lacerations to strangulations if your child's clothing is caught in the machine. Follow our snow blower safety tips if you plan to use a snow blower at a household where children are present.
