Arsenic in your food
Tests by Consumer Reports have found arsenic at worrisome levels in rice products, including organic rice baby cereal, rice breakfast cereals, brown rice, and white rice. Arsenic is a potent human carcinogen and also can set up children for other health problems in later life. Our findings show a real need for federal standards for this toxin.

Consumers Union calls for investigation into dangers posed by detergent packs
Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, has asked the Consumer Product Safety Commission to take steps regarding the dangers posed to children from single-use detergent packets. This year, poison-control centers have received almost 3,000 calls regarding exposure to single-use laundry and dishwasher detergent packs involving children five and younger.

Optimus H-5210 space heater poses safety risk in Consumer Reports' tests
The $25 Optimus H-5210 space heater was the only electric heater in our latest tests that set a test cloth on fire. Test results Optimus sent us also showed a potential safety problem with this model, but the company claims to have fixed it on 2012 models. There is no way to tell the model year from the box.

Drowning is leading cause of unintentional death among young children
A report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found that there were more than 400 deaths over a five-year period among children 5 years old and younger due to unintentional drowning in the home.

Safety Honda recalls more than 600,000 Accord and Acura TL cars due to power-steering leak risk
Honda Motors expanded a recall for its popular Accord and Acura TL sedans in the United States and Canada, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), due to a problem with the power steering system.

Safety GM recalls nearly 41,000 vehicles due to possible fuel-pump leak
General Motors recalled several vehicle models because plastic parts in the fuel pump can crack and cause a fuel leak, increasing the risk of an engine fire. The recall affects the 2007-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, and 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, and Saturn Ion.

Safety Trader Joe's recalls peanut butter due to possible salmonella contamination
Trader Joe's issued a nationwide recall of its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter because the 16-ounce jars may be tainted with salmonella. The recall underscores the need for the Food Safety Modernization Act, a toughened safety bill that has been stalled by the U.S. government for the past nine months.

Safety GM recalls 420,000 cars due to transmission and turn signal problems
General Motors recalled 426,240 of its 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles equipped with four-speed automatic transmissions because the parked cars can roll away if the tabs on the transmission shift cable end fracture and separate.

Safety Window blinds from Blinds Xpress recalled due to strangulation hazard
Blind Xpress of Linovia, Mich., recalled nearly 500,000 window blinds because the horizontal and custom-made vertical blinds have adjustment cords that can strangle young children.
