No longer based on the Golf platform, the all-new 2011 VW Jetta is bigger and roomier with a "surprisingly low" starting price of $15,875, reports Senior Editor, Paul Williams. This addresses the perception that compact Volkswagens are too expensive, he says. 
Changes to the 2011 Smart aren't quite as "next generation" as the company claims, but there's an improved interior, several new options, and an upcoming electric version that Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh enjoyed driving in Germany. 
Based on the Dodge Caliber, this entry-level Jeep hatchback is roomy, comfortable and practical, and is available with AWD for extra winter traction, but it's not particularly exciting to drive and the interior could use some upgrading, says Greg Wilson. 
Depending on your point of view, the X5's stiff ride will either be excellent, or horrible. The low-profile tires don't help, but they do contribute to terrific handling for a "truck." Interior noise levels are very low, too. 
Based on the Toyota 4Runner, the Lexus GX 470 has had issues with a clunky driveshaft, leaky radiator, and burnt out turn signal bulbs, but is still rated above average by Consumer Reports, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase. 
The "uber-cool" rear-wheel drive Dodge Magnum, a collision of old-school design melded with that local "chop shop" mentality, offered an alternative to SUVs for folks hauling around kids, sports equipment and golf clubs, says contributor Jeff Burry.
