Danish sportscar driver Allan Simonsen died on Saturday after crashing his factory Aston Martin in the early stages of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The 34-year-old was leading the GTE Am class aboard his Aston Martin Vantage GTE when he left the track at Tertre Rouge corner on the third lap of the race. The Aston turned sharp left into the barriers at the left hander after going wide onto the kerbs in the right hander.

The driver was attended to at the scene before being transferred to the circuit medical center, where he died soon after from his injuries. A cause of death has not been released.

Simonsen was a prolific driver who was near the top of his profession as a GT driver. It was not uncommon for him to take part in 30 or 40 races a year all over the world in a range...
