The iPhone takes over navigation

The latest version of the iPhone paved the way for real GPS navigation application, and we've reviewed offerings from TomTom, Magellan, MapQuest, and Gokivo. But the iPhone hardware isn't quite up to the performance of a full-fledged portable navigation device, so TomTom created an iPhone cradle with a GPS antenna to amplify the signal. Is TomTom killing its GPS device business by promoting this sort of smartphone convergence? Or has it seen the inevitable, and leading the way on getting a piece of this new market? No, thank you. I'd rather dish-out $200 for a decent dedicated GPS unit that can be left in my car (dock mounted to the glass, with the GPS unit hidden in the glove box), then spending $220 for an application and a dock to an existing piece of hardware.  Read more
