New-car reliability
New-car reliability
The Japanese dominance in car reliability is showing cracks. In the last decade, brands from Japan typically locked in the top slots in our predicted-reliability rankings, rarely letting another carmaker slip in higher than seventh or eighth place. In our latest subscriber survey, though, Audi, Volvo, and GMC secured places in the top 10. See the reliability findings based on 1.1 million vehicles.
Toyota Camry and other models no longer recommended due to safety concerns
A relatively new crash test, conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, shows that some vehicles are much better than others at protecting their occupants in certain types of frontal collisions. And as a result of poor results in this small-overlap frontal crash test, we are dropping our recommendations for four popular models: the Audi A4 and Toyota Camry, Prius V, and RAV4.
Infotainment systems are complicated and trouble prone
Modern infotainment systems that provide myriad audio choices and connect with a smart phone for hands-free calling and data services are attracting tech-enthused shoppers, but the ownership experience is proving frustrating for many, according our latest survey. Both a steep learning curve and reliability issues were reported by car owners with an infotainment system from Cadillac, Honda, Ford, and Lincoln.
New car reliability surprises
Each year, our Annual Auto Survey is sent to millions of Consumer Reports subscribers to determine how vehicles are holding up. Until we cull the data, we never know where the cards will fall. This year's survey revealed some interesting surprises about the state of vehicle reliability, with ups, downs, and more than a few surprises.

The colorful world of automotive paint
The colorful world of automotive paint
Of all the car-buying decisions that you'll make, selecting a color may not be the most involved, but there are implications. A vehicle's color and finish influence the initial purchase price, maintenance, repair, and resale—all greater concerns today, given that Americans are retaining their rides longer than ever. Here, we present a car-finish primer for buying, maintaining, repairing, and reselling your car.

Best & worst fuel economy
Best & worst fuel economy
Collecting our latest test findings, we highlight the vehicles within each category that achieved the best or worst gas mileage in our tests. We have selected mpg cutoffs that are relative to each category. For example, a vehicle that gets 19 mpg would not be a standout among wagons, but it would be among the highest in the midsized SUV or minivan categories.

Best in cargo capacity & fuel economy
Best in cargo capacity & fuel economy
With today's ever changing gas prices, many car buyers are opting to trade cargo space for fuel economy by purchasing a smaller vehicle than they might have otherwise. To help buyers who are looking for cargo capacity and fuel economy, our list highlights vehicles we've tested that provide the best combination of the two.
