Consumer Concern: Air-Conditioning Refrigerant From China Posted: 06 Aug 2010 01:00 PM PDT You may recall the sad case of the contaminated Chinese drywall that erupted last year in Florida, rendering houses uninhabitable. Or the previous year's scandal over melamine-adulterated milk that sickened hundreds of thousands of Chinese children. Now a potential concern over another Chinese product has arisen, and this one's automotive. In...

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued the recall for the Element and ordered that Honda stop selling the vehicle until August 13, 2010, so that repairs can be made to vehicles coming off assembly lines and those at dealers. The recall affects... |
AA: Apple iPod Turns Drivers Into Zombies Posted: 06 Aug 2010 09:50 AM PDT The Apple iPod and iPhone are the root of more than a dozen accidents every day in the UK, and one insurance company says its nation's drivers are losing their grip on good driving thanks to "iPod oblivion." AA Insurance says drivers fall into a "zombie-like state" when using their Apple and other mobile devices while driving, causing up to 17...

Friendly Helpful Speed Camera To Ticket You, Then Text You Too? Posted: 06 Aug 2010 09:21 AM PDT We've written a lot about traffic enforcement cameras, both the ones that nail red-light runners and those that send automatic tickets to drivers who exceed the speed limit. Now a new wrinkle in evolving technology has been proposed: Wouldn't it be nice if the camera system not only sent you an automatic ticket but also texted you to let you know...
General Motors Goes Public About Going Public Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:34 AM PDT A little over a year ago, General Motors was split in two: stockholders were left with shares in "Old GM", known officially as "Motors Liquidation Company" -- currently trading around $.41 -- while "New GM", now known as "General Motors Company" became a privately held enterprise owned by a range of entities, including the U.S. government. That...
This Ain't Your Car: Someone's Going to Pay For This Chrysler Sebring Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:25 AM PDT Have you ever wondered if you've over-modified your car, crossed some boundary of good taste? Thank goodness, this ain't your car. Yesterday the gang at SportsCarMonitor showed you a homemade Batpod spotted rolling the mean streets of, uh, Palo Alto. Today, also from the streets of San Francisco (sort of), we bring you this abomination, which we...
Today at High Gear Media: Scion tC, Hawaii Five-0, and Our Late Nissan Leaf Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:10 AM PDT Six months after the brouhaha kicked off, has Toyota been badly bruised by all those recalls? Today at High Gear Media, our own Bengt Halvorson peers into the recall abyss and reports on TheCarConnection that Toyota may have lost 200,000 sales and 1.5 percent of the entire U.S. market as a result of bad publicity. In related technology, could a...
VIDEO: Mercury Lives On--In Hawaii Five-O Remake Posted: 06 Aug 2010 06:49 AM PDT Hollywood doesn't call them remakes--they euphemize 'em as "reboots" these days. But with this fall's new version of the CBS classic, Hawaii Five-0 is trying to stay as authentic as possible with a raft of new Fords on screen--and at least one old one. CBS may be the only place you'll see a Mercury on TV this year. Ford decided earlier this...
Six Months After The Recalls: Toyota Bruised, Lexus Less So? Posted: 06 Aug 2010 06:00 AM PDT It's been a tough and trying year for Toyota—and Toyota owners. There had already been a few isolated claims of accelerators sticking. But it was the news of an incident, last August—a family (and off-duty cop) in an ES 350, who sped out of control to a fiery death—that punted Toyota's apparent issue with unintended acceleration into the national...
2011 Scion tC: Driven, And Priced Posted: 06 Aug 2010 06:00 AM PDT Scion fell into a sales funk last year, with the teensy xD and the bloated new-generation xB falling prey to the likes of Kia and Hyundai. The Scion tC? The same story. The Celica-ish coupe was in dire need of a replacement--and a personality infusion. It's nearly a mission accomplished for the new 2011 tC, which we drove earlier this week in San...
Holy Two-Wheeled Mayhem, Batman! Batpod Spotted In...Palo Alto? Posted: 05 Aug 2010 02:54 PM PDT It's not everyday that you're walking along the streets of town and you spot a Batman speeder bike, but that's just what happened to our own Jeff Birkeland, on University Avenue in Palo Alto, California, this afternoon. The speeding superhero was apparently in need of some caffeination, as the bike was spotted in front of Starbucks. While we don't...
